Co-sponsored by Oyster and LOUD, the 'Seam' project highlights designers of tomorrow as they are about to graduate from arts and fashion colleges across Australia. Final year classes were approached with a competition brief to send in designs which were innovative, wearable and sellable. Fashion design stars like Akira Isogawa, the Sydney Morning Herald's fashion editor Jane de Teliga and Oyster's own contributing fashion editor, Kelvin Harries, were asked to leaf through the results and select the best students. Finalists were then asked to assemble garments based on their original designs. These were then photographed in a major spread for Oyster magazine, along with profiles on all the finalists. According to Oyster's editor Madelienne Anderson, "we were really happy to do 'Seam'. Now it's something we'll do every year. For very little effort, really, we're encouraging all these young designers. One day down the track they could turn out to be the next Collette Dinnigan or the next Akira. I was a fashion design student myself, so I know how hard and how competitive it is - you might have the talent, but a bit of luck is so important when it comes to publicity and marketing. It can really pull you forward, it can really make you."
"Seam" is out in Oyster on January 29th, available nationally at all newagents.
