The (world famous!) noise! section guide

For all you budding authors, artists, and contributing types, the noise! team have compiled the definitive guide to sending us your stuff. This is what all those section names really mean...

News

News is where we let you know about the latest events related to the LOUD festival. If you're great and doing something great for or about LOUD, there's a big chance we'll profile you here. To include your event, write a story about it and let us know.

Features

Your views; your thoughts; your vision of life around you. If, for example, the current trend in Australian politics is pissing you off, write us an article and tell the world why.  But hey, why just talk politics? Features also deals with a wide range of articles featuring views on the arts and the entertainment scene to youth suicide and the environmental problems facing the world today.  Your chance to be a critic of our times!

The Features section also includes Interviews with the rich and famous, or the not-so-rich and famous. If you think your best friend's cool, interview them and submit it. Or this could be your chance to ask your favourite rock star whether they throw fridges out of hotel windows. Interview musicians, politicians, actors, parents, the fruit shop owner. If you need help or suggestions, e-mail: phip or van.

Fiction

The fiction section gives young writers the opportunity to be read; which is often the most important thing for young writers to achieve, and the most difficult.  noise! is a unique opportunity for writers to explore many issues, ideas, themes and styles:  a diverse, insightful, funny, ugly and confronting 'melting pot' of ideas.

noise! is an environment without restrictions such as publishing costs, manuscript size, or censorship. The idea of "fiction" or "narrative" should be pushed to its limit. In the words of a soon-to-be-famous man: "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance; baffle them with bullshit."

Poetry

Poetry takes so many different forms and means so many different things to those who read and write it.  It is, by its very nature, difficult to define.

The noise! poetry section will actively seek to create a place where people can experiment with expression of many types.  The use of technology will allow noise! to push the boundaries of poetry to include words, images, sounds or video.  It should, because of the access to technology, be able to transcend the barriers between textual poetry, visual art, video and sound.

Galleries

Where we'll showcase the best images submitted to noise! from young Australian's everywhere.

This includes hand drawn stuff like cartoons, comic strips, self-portraits, funny, serious, stupid, it doesn't matter. Put up any work you've drawn. Or get onto a drawing program and play with the mouse. If you only have a paper copy, email van@loud.org.au to try and organise getting it online.

Stuff

Stuff is a big category with room for all the things you want to tell us and yet don't feel that there is a section for. Stuff includes a number of old sections like reviews, events, travel stories, regulars and trends, not necessarily in that order. You submit your reviews, events, travel stories, regulars and trends to the section in question and when one of the editors of noise selects your story for publication they will change it's section to stuff before it finds its way to the contents page. Here is a list of the items that will make up the "Stuff" section of noise:

Reviews
For all you music/film/net/live/print aficionados. Anything you like or don't like you can review. Once you've submitted a review, we'll add you to our reviewers list - you might end up with something in the mail to review and keep forever.

Travel
Have you ever been lost in the jungle, abducted by aliens or stuck on a train to melbourne with a whole load of magicians going to a convention? if so, tell us about it! (oh yeah, and all your other travel stories too.)

Events
noise! wants to know about everything that's happening in your local area. Band nights, Skate Competitions, Festivals, Theatre, whatever - drop us a quick line and tell us all about it.

Regulars
This is, strangely enough, where all our noisy regulars live.

Rants

Had enough of bad hair days? Wish Pauline Hanson would just go back to her fish and chip shop? Want to start campaigning for a four day weekend? Just musing about the price of fish? The rant section is an informal space dedicated to your musing, spieling, raging, whinging and blathering on. So, take your pens mightier than swords and rant, rant, rant . . .

Got something that fits? Feeling inspired? Well, what are you waiting for? Go and submit something!!
