Turn on ... space pop or F*ckery?

(submitted by stereopathic.)

Turn On
29 minutes
(Duophonic Super 45ís)

Turn On is Tim Gane and Andy Ramsy (both from Stereolab) and Sean OíHagen (the High Lamas). The blurb on the front of the cd declared this to be electronic fuckery (a phrase probably stolen from the press release - as most blurbs tend to be). However itís probably a good description to begin with as there does seem to be a fair amount of fuckery going on here but i hesitate to say it is 'fucked up' in the sense that a boredoms recording may be (and rightly be labelled 'fuckery')

Rather this is seems to be a quite controlled 'space pop' influenced sort of fuckery whilst carrying a strong
sense of the 'Stereolab aesthetic'. Indeed Laetitia from the aformentioned band appears on the only track of the recording to have any vocals; reminiscent of a sixties bubble gum theme song 'bu bu bu da dum' complete with hand clappings as the (up)beat Ru Tenone does much to carry and encompass the overall feeling of fun cheap plastic and fuckery. Indeed many of the tunes found on this album would be suited to television theme songs or soundtrack backing tunes albeit for a cheap space comedy starring Sharon Doherty and that guy who used to be 'Doogie Howser'
