Under Milk Wood
a Piece of Stuff by Mahone (Craig Garrett)
Mahone, reporting from Canberra, about a play called Under Milk Wood which concerns itself with a "town that was mad."
In October Canberra will witness a ìjoyous and bawdy celebration of eccentric humans.îThe Scotch Players, a young performing troupe from Adelaide whose members are aged between sixteen and twenty-five, will travel to Canberra to perform Under Milk Wood. This tour brings together young artists and performers from three cities: Adelaide, Perth and Canberra.
Under Milk Wood contains seventy characters, has no stage directions and no scenes. It was first written by Dylan Thomas for radio in 1954 and tells the story of Llareggub (try it backwards): a place [town] where everything that forbids the freedom of the individual is wrong. In this production Llareggub is depicted by a central pump that dispenses both water and Guiness. Performed in the round, the actors remain in the performance space for the duration, and fill the air with their voices and Thomasí almost edible words.
Under Milk Wood will be performed at the Street Theatre Studio from Friday October 10 to Sunday October 12.
Works by Dylan Thomas include Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog (prose), Deaths and Entrances (poetry), and the play for voices Under Milk Wood (1954).
Created on Sun, 21 Sep 1997 and last modified on Mon, 13 Oct 1997.
