Public Radio is important
a Rant by frail (Ben Gook)

Blow away the myths about the youth network and it's apperance as helpful to the ausmusic scene.

THE YOUTH NETWORK sucks. Why you may ask. Well, think about it. How many new artists do you hear on THE NATIONAL YOUTH NETWORK per year. Maybe 10-15. Discount all the Unearthed winners because we all know they sound the same as any other try hard heavy groove band. Look at bands such as Art Of Fighting. Never heard of them? Well, if you listened to RRR, SRA or PBS in Melbourne you would have because they give much support to young bands such as this.

Why do you think the music scene is healthy in Melbourne? Because of these stations supporting these young bands by playing their music, the scene in Melbourne has flourished into something beautiful and fruitful. Although Jon Spencer Blues Explosion may not be an Australian act, his latest appearance in Australia is a good example of what radio can do for a band. As his fans will know he is left of centre and fairly underground. So you would not expect much more than club shows, right, wrong down here in Melbourne he sold out one show in approximately 6-7 hours and then sold out another show. Thatís about 4000 tickets in one town! Why? Because RRR, PBS and SRA give support to the left of centre music. In the other towns they struggled to sell as many tickets as in Melbourne, in fact he rubber gloved his Brisbane fans so as he could play a second show in Melbourne. They can do that for a young local band as well as any other international act.

The NATIONAL YOUTH NETWORK is playlisted. The presenters are given a list of songs they HAVE to play and then get ONE choice of their own per hour. How can a young bandís song slowly creep onto radio like this? With the old un-playlisted system a DJ could discover a few bandís in his/her local area then play the song or a few songs from them during his show. Then another DJ may hear it then play it and gradually creep in more and more. If one person decides what EVERYONE hears and plays surely that is not helping to create a healthy, young and vibrant scene.
