| Les Saxby Japurulla is of the Wonnaruah people and
comes from Wollombi-Singleton area in NSW. From an early
age he expressed interest in performing and painting his
Dreamings. In 1993 he met the renowned artist Malcolm Jagamarra, from whom he learnt how to express himself and his dreamings through art. With this new found skill Les started to paint the Dreamings of his ancestors, the Wonnaruah Tribe and the area of Wollimbi near Newcastle where he is part custodian too. Les feels that the old ways of teaching have disappeared and a lot of the Dreamings have been lost. This is due to European settlement and a different set of laws that didn't allow ceromonies or gatherings by aboriginal people in the period of colonisation. So, it is now up to younger artists, such as Les, to piece all these dreamings together with what little information there is, and start to teach the children and do all that can be done to keep the Dreamings alive for the present and future generations to come. Although he is still in a early stage of his career as an artist, people are starting to take interest in his work. His work has been shown in group exhibitions including the Jagamarra Collection in Sydney in1994, in Nagoya, Japan in 1995 and the Global Colours Art Exhition in 1997. Les has an Associate Diploma in Aboriginal Studies from the University of Technology, Sydney. |
