| This photograph is one of thirteen photographs which deal with women and abuse of the female body. It was taken about four months ago in a private photographic shoot. After looking through my photographic works over the last two years in the view of finding one that best suited the topic of and reflected what it meant to be apart of Australia's youth, I selected this photograph for numerous reasons. I believe that when dealing with what it is like to be part of Australia's youth culture, the darker side of society and youth is often ignored or looked over. Abuse and violence is a prominent part of today's youth in Australia, simply look at the news or pick up a newspaper. Especially in regard to women - with the statistics of rape and physical abuse reaching a shocking rate in young people. This photograph shows the danger involved with being apart of today's youth and the distorted view that is held and viewed by those on the outside and inside. This picture means a lot to me - I believe it shows the more brutal and darker side of growing up as a woman in today's Australian youth and one that cannot be ignored any longer. |
